European gas hubs were notably volatile in Winter 17/18, the result of a long, cold winter and key supply outages. LNG flows slowed down in mid as Asian markets retained a strong premium through key mid winter months. But what of Winter 18/19? Gas prices have maintained a bullish trajectory throughout most of summer alongside similar bullishness in oil, coal and carbon.
The webinar for the European Gas Outlook: Winter 2018/19 will take place on September 25th; and follows the publication of the written report on September 18th. The hubs in focus will be NBP and TTF.
The webinar will seek to answer how exposed Europe is to another cold winter. Using 35 years of weather history, we run multiple scenarios to uncover the likelihood that Europe will need to compete with Asia for Atlantic LNG and bridge the substantial discount that Europe currently holds to Asian prices for mid winter delivery.
In order to arrive at this conclusion we forecast all factors critical to European supply and demand, including UKCS production; Norwegian export; Dutch production; Russian exports. Our forecast also utilizes expert analysis from the Thomson Reuters LNG research team to forecast a baseload LNG arrivals expectation for Europe.
Key questions we ask for the supply and demand balance are:
- Will the UKCS continue to mature, and at what rate?
- What to expect from Dutch production. Where do future risks lie?
- What new fields are expected from Norway and what impact could this have?
- Is Russian piped-gas expected to continue flowing and record rates; and what happens once contractual offtake reaches maximum?
- What are the risks to the LNG outlook? What would need to happen for Europe to get more LNG without a price increase?
- Will high prices be needed to stunt gas for power demand? Where do we expect gas prices to be in the European fuel switch range?
