When natural gas is cooled down to approximately -163°C under atmospheric pressure, it liquefies and called liquefied natural gas (LNG). When one unit volume of natural gas is vaporized, approximately 600 unit volume of natural gas is obtained. Density of LNG is lower than half of the water density. LNG, in its natural state, is an odourless, colourless, non-corrosive and non-intoxicant liquid. After it is vaporized, odorants are added before offering into use in order to enable easy recognition thereof.
In 2017, total global trade of LNG reached to 393.4 bcm. This is the largest amount reached in the LNG market. 31% of total import of LNG is carried out by Middle East. Almost one-third of global trade is carried out by only Qatar.
