In recent years, there have been significant developments in the field of natural gas storage facilities to ensure supply security to which the government attaches a great importance. There are 5 companies which hold underground storage licenses. The only underground storage facility in use is Silivri North Marmara and Değirmenköy Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility, which is located in Silivri district of Istanbul and whose operation was transferred from TPAO to BOTAŞ on 01.09.2016. In addition, the Salt Lake Underground Natural Gas Storage Project is under construction. Within the scope of the project, a total of 12 storage facilities are planned to be constructed in 2 groups of 6 storage facilities and a total of approximately 1 billion m3 operation gas is planned to be stored, corresponding to an amount of 80 million m3 per storage facility. The introduction of the first FSRU terminal of Turkey in 2017 led to an increase in the storage capacity. Accordingly, total stock amount of the storage facilities reached 3.191 million Sm3 at the end of the year.
